YOLO

by Royce

Scripture: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

“YOLO” – You Only Live Once. This popular phrase has become the battle cry of a generation seeking to experience everything this world has to offer. It’s the justification for bucket lists and spontaneous adventures, for splurging on luxury and chasing thrilling experiences. After all, if this life is all we have, shouldn’t we make the most of it?

From a worldly perspective, YOLO makes perfect sense. Life follows a predictable pattern: you’re born, you live, you retire, and eventually, you die. With this understanding, the urgent pursuit of pleasure and experiences becomes rational. Why not travel first-class? Why not indulge in every luxury? Why not live like royalty while you can? The regrets of missed opportunities seem to outweigh the consequences of excess.

This mindset says: “Seize the day because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.”

But what if YOLO means something profoundly different in God’s kingdom? What if “once” actually means “once and forever”? This transforms everything.

In God’s economy, this earthly life isn’t the main event—it’s the preparation. Scripture teaches us that God disciplines those He loves, not to restrict our joy but to prepare us for an eternal weight of glory:

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)

God’s discipline in our lives isn’t punishment—it’s preparation. He’s developing in us the character and responsibility needed to handle eternity.

Consider this profound truth: earthly regrets end at death, but eternal regrets would be an unbearable burden with no end. This is why God, in His mercy, trains us now. He’s teaching us to live with responsibility, integrity, and love. Qualities that align with the reality of His kingdom.

When we understand YOLO from God’s perspective, our priorities shift dramatically. Suddenly, character matters more than comfort. Faithfulness outweighs momentary pleasure. Service becomes more valuable than status.

So how do we live when we understand that we truly do only live once—for eternity?

  1. We receive God’s discipline with gratitude, understanding it shapes us for eternal purposes.
  2. We make choices based not just on immediate gratification but on eternal significance.
  3. We value character development over experience collection.
  4. We invest in relationships and service that have eternal impact.
  5. We live generously, knowing that heavenly treasures are the only ones that last.

In this light, YOLO becomes not a call to self-indulgence but an invitation to purposeful living. You only live once—and that life stretches into eternity. Every moment matters not because it’s fleeting, but because it’s forming who you will be forever.

May we embrace God’s loving discipline, recognizing that He is preparing us not just for a good life, but for a glorious eternity where the joy of His presence will make even our greatest earthly pleasures pale in comparison.

Live like you only live once, because in Christ, that life is eternal.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of eternal life through Your Son Jesus Christ. Give us wisdom to see beyond the temporary pleasures of this world and to embrace Your loving discipline in our lives. Help us to live each day with eternity in mind, making choices that honor You and prepare us for forever in Your presence.

Teach us to value what You value and to willingly submit to Your refining work in our lives. When we are tempted to live for the moment, remind us that we are eternal beings made for an eternal purpose. May we steward this one life well, knowing that its impact stretches far beyond our earthly days.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
