“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.'” — John 2:5
The start of 2025 brought an amusing cosmic coincidence — opening with “WTF” (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) followed by a “double S” weekend (Saturday, Sunday). This playful pattern feels oddly fitting for our times.
Looking back from the COVID-19 pandemic to now, life has indeed felt like a relentless roller coaster. The pace of change has been dizzying, and our interconnected global economy means local events ripple worldwide with unprecedented speed and impact. What happens in one corner of the world now quickly touches us all.
As a follower of Jesus, charged with sharing His good news and making it relevant in today’s world, I often find myself in honest conversation with God: “Why must this mission be so challenging?”
In response, He gently directs my attention to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Her story serves as a profound reminder — she faced an extraordinary calling that brought both unprecedented blessing and tremendous challenge. Mary was the only person in history to witness the fulfillment of God’s promise to save the world within her lifetime.
Consider her journey: a virgin faced with divine pregnancy, risking social ostracism and death. A nine-month pregnant woman traveling four days by donkey for a census. A new mother giving birth in a stable. A refugee fleeing to Egypt to protect her child. And ultimately, a mom watching her son’s crucifixion before witnessing His glorious resurrection.
Through it all, Mary experienced God’s faithfulness in extraordinary ways. Who could have predicted Eastern kings traveling thousands of miles to honor her carpenter’s son? Each seemingly impossible situation strengthened her faith, preparing her for future challenges.
This deep trust became evident at the wedding in Cana. When the wine ran out — a situation that threatened the host family’s honor — Mary didn’t panic. Her years of witnessing God’s provision had taught her an invaluable lesson: bring your problems to Jesus and trust Him.
I don’t know what 2025 will bring for any of us, but I want to remind you that our ultimate ending has already been written in Revelation 21:
“Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'”
No matter what uncertainties lie ahead, we can find hope in this promise of God’s ultimate restoration and eternal presence with His people.
Life may feel like a roller coaster at times, but a glorious finish line awaits all who believe in Jesus. Like Mary, we may not always understand how Jesus will resolve our challenges. His solutions often surprise us, turning our water into wine in ways beyond our imagination. Yet, our role remains unchanged: bring our problems to Him and follow His guidance, even when it seems unconventional.
Let us adopt Mary’s posture of trust and faith in Jesus. So often, God’s “how” begins with our “yes.” Today, let’s follow Mary’s example — present your need to Jesus, and then do whatever He tells you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, like Mary, help us trust You with our impossible situations. Give us the courage to bring our problems to You and the faith to follow Your instructions, even when they don’t make immediate sense. Thank You that You’re still in the business of turning our water into wine. In Your name, Amen.
