Trusting God’s Sovereignty

by Royce

Scripture: “The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.” — Proverbs 16:4 (ESV)

During World War II, Corrie Ten Boom and her family risked their lives hiding Jewish people from the Nazis. Eventually, they were caught and sent to a concentration camp. Amidst the horrors of Ravensbrück, a notorious women’s camp, Corrie struggled to see God’s hand at work. The cramped, filthy barracks were filled with fleas, and Corrie was beside herself with frustration, unable to understand how this could fit into God’s plan.

However, the fleas became a blessing in disguise. Corrie and her sister Betsie soon realized that the guards refused to enter their barracks because of the infestation, allowing them to hold Bible studies and worship freely with the other women. As terrible as it was, God had used even the fleas to bring hope and His Word into the darkest of places. After the war, Corrie shared her story worldwide, testifying to God’s sovereignty and how He could bring purpose and even protection through something as unpleasant as fleas.

Proverbs 16:4 reminds us that God is in control, and nothing escapes His attention or His purpose. Just as Corrie Ten Boom experienced, even the painful or perplexing circumstances in our lives can be woven into a bigger, divine tapestry we may not fully understand right away.

God’s sovereignty doesn’t mean we won’t face suffering or injustice. In fact, Scripture acknowledges that trials and “days of trouble” will come. Yet, as we see throughout the Bible, God uses both good and bad for His glory and our growth. In Corrie’s case, something as seemingly meaningless as fleas provided her and the other prisoners with the freedom to share God’s Word. What looked like a setback became an essential part of His plan.

Like Corrie, we may sometimes face trials that seem unfair or confusing. We might feel surrounded by “fleas”—difficulties that test our patience, peace, or faith. But Proverbs 16:4 calls us to trust that God has a purpose for every situation. Even those who oppose us, or who bring difficulty into our lives, are ultimately under God’s authority, and He will use every challenge to accomplish His purpose.

Reflection Questions:

  • Can you think of a situation in your life that felt pointless or difficult but later proved to have a hidden purpose or blessing?
  • Are there any “fleas” in your life—things that cause you frustration or pain—that might have a purpose you don’t yet understand?
  • How can Proverbs 16:4 help you find peace in situations where you feel out of control or unable to understand why something is happening?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God of purpose, even when I don’t understand Your plans. Help me to trust that everything has a place in Your divine story, even the struggles or the people who may oppose me. Teach me to see Your hand in my challenges, and give me peace in knowing that nothing escapes Your control. Just as You were with Corrie in her darkest moments, I trust that You are with me in mine. Help me to surrender to Your purpose, believing that You are working all things for my good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
