Trusting God in the Dark

Scripture: Psalm 13:1-6 – “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?… But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation.”

Horatio Spafford was a successful lawyer and devout Christian in the late 1800s. After suffering significant financial losses in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, he faced an even greater tragedy. In 1873, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them later. Tragically, the ship collided with another vessel and sank, resulting in the deaths of his four daughters. Only his wife survived, sending a heartbreaking message: “Saved alone.”

On his way to join his wife, Spafford’s ship passed the very spot where his daughters had drowned. Grieving yet determined, he penned the words to the famous hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul.” Rather than giving in to despair, Spafford found peace in his faith, writing, “When sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.”

Spafford’s story reminds us that trusting God in the dark means finding peace in His presence, even when we cannot understand the depth of our pain or loss. His hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul,” became a profound source of encouragement for countless others facing trials and sorrow. Through his words, Spafford’s faith speaks across generations, inviting us to surrender our burdens and rest in God’s goodness and sovereignty, no matter what storms we face. His unwavering trust in God reminds us that, even in life’s darkest moments, we can find hope and strength in the assurance that God is with us.

In Psalm 13, David finds himself in the thick of despair, expressing a profound sense of abandonment and loss. He asks, “How long, O Lord?” multiple times, as if the ache of waiting has chipped away at his hope. Yet, David chooses to trust in God’s steadfast love, even without immediate relief or answers. This Psalm illustrates the journey from doubt to trust, from feeling forgotten to finding assurance in God’s presence.

1. Reflecting on Times of Feeling Forsaken

David’s feelings are intensely human—feeling forgotten by God, as if he’s shouting into the void. Have you ever felt isolated or forgotten by God? Maybe you’ve wrestled with the silence of unanswered prayers or felt like you were wandering in a desert of uncertainty. In these moments, it’s tempting to rely on our senses and emotions, which tell us God is distant. But God’s love isn’t dictated by our feelings. Like the sun hidden behind clouds, His presence remains constant, even when obscured by life’s storms.

2. Learning to Trust in the Dark

God sometimes allows us to experience seasons of darkness, not to abandon us but to grow our faith. It’s easy to trust God when blessings are clear and life is smooth. But when we can’t see the outcome or feel His presence, we’re called to deepen our faith, resting in His promises alone. This darkness becomes a training ground for our souls, a place where faith is refined and purified.

3. Realizing the Power of Praise Amidst Pain

David’s journey in this Psalm closes with a declaration of trust and joy, even as his circumstances remain unchanged. He says, “My heart rejoices in Your salvation.” Sometimes, choosing to praise God amidst our struggles—when we don’t see the way out—is a powerful testament of trust. Praise shifts our focus from our troubles to God’s faithfulness and power, giving us strength to keep going.

Reflection Questions

  • When have you felt like God was silent or distant? How did that season impact your faith? Reflect on any ways God may have been at work even when you didn’t see it at the time.
  • What does “trusting God with the lights off” mean for you personally? Think about areas of your life where you may need to let go of the need for control and instead lean into trusting His unseen presence and wisdom.
  • How can you practice praise during dark times? Is there a promise from Scripture or a worship song that helps you shift your focus from the struggle to God’s steadfast love? Consider ways you can weave praise into your daily life, especially when challenges arise.
  • How might God be growing your faith through your current struggles? Reflect on the “growing pains” in your spiritual journey. Where might God be asking you to trust Him more deeply, even when the outcome is uncertain?
