The Ultimate Membership Benefit: Grace

We live in a membership-driven world. Your wallet likely holds multiple cards promising exclusive benefits, rewards, and status upgrades. From airline miles to shopping perks, streaming services to fitness clubs, we’re constantly reminded that better benefits come to those who pay more. But what if there’s a membership that completely flips this system upside down?
Every earthly membership follows the same basic principle: pay more, get more.
Credit Cards: Start with a basic card and minimal benefits. Upgrade to platinum for better rewards, airport lounges, and premium services. Reach the exclusive black card level by paying the highest fees for the most luxurious perks.
Fitness Centers: Basic memberships get you through the door. Platinum memberships unlock personal training, specialty classes, and VIP amenities. Miss a payment, and your keycard stops working immediately.
Airlines: Economy passengers pay for the privilege of cramped seats. Premium passengers pay significantly more for extra legroom, priority boarding, and better meals. First-class passengers pay the most and receive the royal treatment.
The message is clear: Your benefits match your investment. Want better treatment? Pay higher dues. Can’t afford the upgrade? Stay in your current tier. Stop paying altogether? You’re out.
Enter the Kingdom of Heaven, where everything operates in reverse.
The Entrance Fee: You cannot buy your way in. No amount of money, good deeds, or social status grants access. Entry comes only through faith in Jesus Christ—absolutely free to you, yet infinitely costly because Jesus paid with His life.
Universal Benefits: Every member receives identical core benefits:
- Complete forgiveness of sins (Colossians 2:13-14)
- Eternal life with God (John 10:28)
- Direct access to the Father through prayer (Hebrews 4:16)
- God’s Spirit living within you (Romans 8:11)
- Full adoption as God’s children (Galatians 4:5)
The Status System: Here’s where it gets radical. In Jesus’ system, those who appear to have “platinum status” are actually those who have nothing to give and all they can do is receive (Matthew 5:3).
Consider Jesus’ own words: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32). The tax collectors, broken-hearted, and desperate weren’t treated as second-class members—they often received the warmest welcome.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently reversed worldly expectations:
The Vineyard Workers (Matthew 20:1-16): Those who worked one hour received the same payment as those who labored all day. The owner’s generosity wasn’t based on performance but on his character.
The Dying Thief (Luke 23:39-43): No church attendance, no baptism, no charitable giving, no years of faithful service—just a desperate prayer in his final moments. Jesus promised him paradise that very day.
The Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32): The rebellious son who wasted his inheritance and brought shame to his family received not just forgiveness, but a celebration. Meanwhile, the faithful son who never left struggled to understand such extravagant grace.
The Fundamental Difference
Worldly Memberships: You pay to earn and maintain your status. Better benefits require bigger payments. Your standing depends entirely on your continued contributions.
God’s Membership: Jesus pays for your status and maintains it forever. Your benefits are gifts, not purchases. Your standing depends entirely on His completed work, not your ongoing performance.
In the world’s system, VIPs are those who can afford the highest tier. In God’s system, the “VIPs” are the “Very Important People” who recognize they have nothing to offer but receive everything through His grace.
Understanding God’s membership transforms everything:
It humbles us: We cannot earn our way to a higher tier with God. The ground at the cross is completely level.
It secures us: Our membership cannot be cancelled due to poor performance or insufficient payment. Christ’s payment covers all past, present, and future dues.
It frees us: We serve not to maintain our status but out of gratitude for the status we’ve already received.
It softens us: Knowing we’ve received undeserved grace makes us quick to extend that same grace to others.
When we truly grasp that we belong to the ultimate membership—not because we qualified, but because Jesus qualified us—it changes how we view ourselves and others. We stop trying to upgrade our spiritual status through religious performance and start living from the security of knowing we’re already fully accepted.
The most profound members of God’s kingdom often appear to be the least impressive by worldly standards. They’re the ones who know they bring nothing to the table except empty hands ready to receive everything God wants to give.
Prayer
Father, thank You for a membership that doesn’t depend on our ability to pay but on Jesus’ willingness to pay for us. Help us live from the security of knowing we’re fully accepted, not the anxiety of trying to earn our place. May the grace we’ve freely received flow freely through us to others.
