Reimagining The Last Supper
by Royce
What does it feel like to realize that your feet were washed by the hands of God?
Can you imagine the feeling of Jesus’ disciples, realizing that those hands that washed their feet were not just the hands of a great teacher but also the hands that created humanity?
Jewish people grew up believing that God lived in Jerusalem’s Holy Temple. You couldn’t come directly to God. Only the high priest was allowed to enter God’s presence. Sinners couldn’t come near God — they would die in His holy presence. Even Israel’s high priest who would enter the Holy of Holies needed to properly atone for their sin. Otherwise, God would strike them dead when they entered the presence of the Shekinah — the glory of God. You simply couldn’t approach God casually in that era.
Can you imagine their surprise when they met with the resurrected Jesus and realized that He truly was whom He said He was? The Son of God. All this time they were in the presence of The Most Holy and they didn’t die. He even washed their filthy feet!
Brothers and sisters, as we look back and connect the dots, today Jesus is not just washing your feet. He washes your soul — the soul that longs for meaning, for the answer to “why am I here?” The soul that is weary trying to make a way to be with its creator.
Let’s look back and see that it was God through Jesus who came to you. You can’t find how to come to God in the gospel because it’s a story of God who came to you while you were still a sinner. From the moment Adam sinned, it was God who pursued humanity, not the other way around.
I pray tonight you invite God into your heart, receive His love, His joy, His peace, His forbearance, His kindness, His goodness, His faithfulness, and His gentleness. He paid with His blood just to be with you.
Have a blessed long weekend, my dear brothers and sisters.
