No Winners, Only We in Relationships

Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Relationships can often feel like competitions where we are tempted to “win” at the cost of others. Whether it’s through arguments, blame, or manipulation, we may find ourselves playing relational games that are harmful to both parties. Yet, the Apostle Paul reminds us that in relationships, the true win isn’t about one person coming out on top, but about mutual love and honor.
In marriage, we often encounter moments where we feel the need to assert our opinions or prove a point. Whether it’s about daily decisions, misunderstandings, or deeper conflicts, the temptation to “win” an argument can be strong. But what does it mean to win in a relationship where both individuals are meant to be one?
In the context of marriage, whenever a situation creates a “winner” and a “loser,” both parties ultimately lose. The real prize in any relationship, especially in marriage, is the relationship itself—mutually growing, thriving, and becoming more like Christ together.
Think about how Jesus, despite His divinity, made Himself nothing, taking on the nature of a servant (Philippians 2:7). He didn’t seek to elevate Himself over others but demonstrated honor by serving and sacrificing for them.
In our relationships, whether at home, work, or in the community, we are called to reflect this same attitude. By putting others first, we emulate Christ’s humility and love, fostering relationships where there are no winners, Only We.
Personal Application: In what ways have I been competing in my relationships, seeking to “win” through arguments or power struggles? How can I begin to out-honor those around me today, showing them the love and respect that Christ demonstrated? As I interact with my family, colleagues, or friends, I will strive to honor them above myself, choosing humility over pride.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the ultimate example of humility and love. Help me to stop playing the games that harm my relationships. Instead, empower me to honor others, just as You have honored me with Your sacrificial love. Teach me to see others as You see them, and give me the strength to love and serve them with a Christlike heart. Amen.
