First Things First – Focusing on What Truly Matters

by Royce

Scripture: Luke 12:22-31

In Luke 12:22, Jesus tells His disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.” This passage emphasizes a vital spiritual truth: worry divides our minds, making it hard to focus on what really matters—our relationship with God and His kingdom.

Jesus makes it clear that worry stems from a lack of trust in God’s provision. When we let fear and anxiety control us, we become fragmented, unable to fully give ourselves to God’s work. This divided attention prevents us from living in the freedom and peace He desires for us. The root of both greed and worry is a failure to trust God to meet our needs.

Christ invites us to shift our perspective and “put first things first” (Luke 12:31): “Seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” Instead of letting worry distract us, He calls us to focus on what truly matters—God’s kingdom. When we align our priorities with God’s will, He promises to meet all our needs. This is a reminder to trust that God, who cares for the birds and flowers, will also care for us.

Worry offers no benefit. Jesus asks, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (Luke 12:25). Worrying won’t extend our days or improve our circumstances. Instead, it keeps us from experiencing the fullness of life that God offers. Our task is to place our focus on God’s purposes and trust Him with the details.

In a world that often draws us in multiple directions, we are called to focus on the one thing that matters—God’s kingdom. As we seek first His kingdom, we can rest assured that He will provide for our needs, freeing us from the divided mind that worry brings.

Reflection: What areas of your life are being dominated by worry, and how can you entrust them to God today?

Prayer: Lord, teach us to trust You fully, putting first Your kingdom and allowing You to take care of all our needs. Help us to stay focused on what truly matters, rather than being divided by worry. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
