When the Miracle Stops: The Beginning of Maturity

by Royce

Scripture: Joshua 5:10–12 (NIV)

“On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land… The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.”

In the wilderness, the Israelites depended on God’s miraculous provision of manna to sustain them daily. It was a visible sign of God’s care, a miracle they had grown accustomed to. But as soon as they entered the Promised Land and tasted its produce, the manna ceased. This shift marks a profound moment in their journey — not just physically but spiritually.

The cessation of manna can be unsettling. Yet this is not a sign of God’s abandonment — it is an invitation to maturity. When the manna stopped, the Israelites were called to step into a new season where they would need to cultivate the land, make wise decisions, and rely on God in less visible, more tangible ways.

The miracle stopping was not a punishment; it was an indication that they had reached a point where they could take on more responsibility. Similarly, when we no longer experience the miraculous, it could be a sign that God is calling us to grow in responsibility and stewardship. The absence of miracles does not mean the absence of God — it is a shift in how we are to engage with Him.

Maturity in faith means recognizing that God’s hand is at work even in daily, menial tasks. The Promised Land required effort to enjoy its fruits. Likewise, when God’s provision comes through our efforts, it is a sign we are living in His promises — a new phase where God partners with us, rather than doing everything for us.

Reflection

Is there an area in your life where you feel the “manna” has stopped? Instead of feeling abandoned, consider it an invitation from God to grow in maturity — to trust Him in new ways and to embrace the responsibilities that come with living in His promises.

Prayer

Lord, help me to trust You when the miraculous seems to cease, knowing that it is an opportunity to grow in faith and responsibility. May I embrace the work You have called me to do and trust in Your provision in every season. Amen.
