Discovering Abundant Life: Following the Right Master
by Royce
Our faith journey often mirrors the trek of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land — a passage from bondage to freedom. Many believe that reaching the promised land ensures a life of abundance and fulfillment.
However, the Israelites only experienced true peace in the Promised Land while Joshua was alive (Joshua 24:29). Their period of contentment lasted merely 50 years before they began to falter. Entry into the Promised Land did not guarantee a life of fullness; rather, it depended on whom they served — their true master.
In Egypt, the Israelites resided in a land teeming with resources, yet they served a malevolent master. In Canaan, surrounded by plenty, they became their own masters — and found themselves discontented. But in the desert, a barren and lethal landscape, they lacked material wealth yet possessed sustenance, enduring garments, and unworn sandals (Deuteronomy 29:5). Their abundant life stemmed not from their environment, but from God as their master, whose presence never deserted them (Exodus 13:21–22).
True abundance transcends resources and circumstances. In the desert, devoid of resources, they lacked nothing and multiplied over 40 years — not because of an abundance of resources, but because God was their master.
So, whose mastery do you follow — the master who loves you and sacrificed His son for you?
Points to Ponder
- Reflect on your current master: Take time to evaluate who or what you are serving.
- Seek God’s presence: Make a conscious effort to spend time with God daily through prayer, meditation, or reading the Bible.
- Surrender to God’s will: Let go of the desire to control your own life and trust that He has your best interests at heart.
- Cultivate gratitude: Focus on the blessings in your life, no matter how small they may seem.
- Serve others: Follow the example of Jesus and serve others with love and compassion.
