An Extreme Sport

by Royce

When considering extreme sports, the adrenaline-pumping activities like skydiving, base jumping, rock climbing, and parkour often take center stage in our thoughts. The thrill of these endeavors challenges our limits and pushes us beyond our comfort zones. However, have you ever considered that loving others is also an extreme sport?

In Isaiah 58:8–12, we find a profound perspective on the extremities of compassion and selflessness:

“Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.”

Loving others, as depicted in these verses, is not merely a passive act. It is an extreme sport of the heart — one that propels us into a life of generosity, justice, and compassion. Just as extreme sports demand courage and commitment, the call to love others challenges us to break through the barriers of selfishness, prejudice, and indifference.

Verse 10 beautifully illustrates this concept: “And if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” This act of selfless love is an extreme sport that transforms the darkness around us into the radiant light of God’s love.

As we marvel at the daredevils conquering mountains and diving from the sky, let us not forget the most extreme sport of all — the radical, transformative love that Isaiah speaks of. In a world that often emphasizes individual achievements, let us embrace the extreme sport of love, spending ourselves on behalf of others, and in doing so, reflecting the glorious light of God’s compassion.

So, if you want to try extreme sports — try LOVE.
