And despite every reason it should have failed—Jesus handing authority to illiterate, blue-collar workers with no money, no education, and no social standing, who had abandoned him in his darkest hour—it became the most successful succession in human history. Despite the mighty Roman Empire’s attempts to destroy this movement, it not only survived but outlasted Rome itself, with Rome eventually adopting the very faith it had tried to crush.
Scripture: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.'” – Matthew 28:18-19
When we read the Great Commission, most of us immediately focus on the “GO” part. Go make disciples. Go to all nations. Go baptize. We jump straight to the action items and miss the most crucial part of this succession plan.
But Jesus doesn’t start with “GO.” He starts with “ALL AUTHORITY.”
Before Jesus delegates the mission, he establishes the foundation: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Most succession plans fail because the predecessor doesn’t actually have the authority to guarantee success. But Jesus’ succession plan is backed by unlimited authority.
Here’s where this succession becomes unprecedented. Instead of using this authority to show off his might or take revenge on those who wronged him, Jesus chooses to use his authority to empower others: “Therefore go…”
His mission is clear, as Scripture reveals: God “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). The Lord is “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
Think about what Jesus could have done with all that authority. After being rejected, mocked, betrayed, and crucified, he had every right to use his power for revenge. And here’s the stunning part: Jesus invites us to participate in his rescue mission. He’s transferring authority to the very people who rejected him to be part of his glorious story. He’s saying, “I’m giving you access to unlimited authority—not to build your empire, but to join my rescue operation.”
This succession comes with a complete redefinition of success metrics.

Traditional Success Thinking:

- Achieve goals → Climb higher
- Generate results → Increase personal value
- Leverage relationships → Maximize personal benefit
Kingdom Succession Thinking:
- Receive authority → Steward it for God’s rescue mission
- Build influence → Draw people toward curiosity about Jesus
- Achieve goals → Advance God’s desire that all be saved
- Generate results → Lives transformed for eternity
- Leverage relationships → Participate in the greatest rescue operation in history
The first paradigm asks: “How can I use success to gain more authority?” The second asks: “How can I use the authority Jesus gave me to participate in his mission?”
This is what makes Jesus’ succession plan unprecedented. When he declares “all authority has been given to me,” he’s not hoarding it like a dictator consolidating power. He’s sharing it like a rabbi who invites disciples into life together, teaching them not just knowledge but a way of living.
Every believer receives a transfer of heaven’s authority—but the success metric isn’t personal achievement, it’s seeing all people saved.
Think about this: The same authority that created galaxies, that calmed storms, that raised the dead, is now backing your mission. Not to build your personal brand, but to see people saved. Not to achieve your five-year plan, but to fulfill God’s desire that all people come to salvation.

Jesus didn’t just give you a mission—he gave you unlimited authority to accomplish it. Your office is your mission field, backed by heaven. Your industry is your parish, empowered by the one who controls all markets. Your professional relationships are your opportunities to participate in God’s rescue mission, with the full authority of heaven behind you.
At year-end, you’ll calculate financial returns. Profit and loss statements. Growth metrics. Performance reviews. But Jesus’ succession plan measures success differently: What’s your Return on the Authority he transferred to you?
When you steward his authority well, the fruit is unmistakable: colleagues begin asking about the source of your peace in stressful situations. Your integrity in difficult deals becomes a testimony that makes people curious about what drives your ethical choices. Your generosity creates opportunities for deeper conversations about faith. Your success becomes a platform that draws others to wonder about the hope you carry. Lives are transformed not because of your perfection, but because of your authenticity in following Christ in the workplace.
Success isn’t measured by what you accumulated, but by how many people you influenced toward curiosity about Jesus.
Jesus completed the most successful succession in history. He didn’t retreat to heaven to micromanage—he transferred his authority and expects a return on his investment. But the dividends he’s looking for aren’t measured in dollars or promotions. They’re measured in souls saved.
The question isn’t whether you’ll be successful in your career—it’s whether your success will lead people toward curiosity about Jesus. The question isn’t whether you’ll achieve your goals—it’s whether your achievements will advance God’s desire that all people be saved.
You’ve been given unlimited authority, but it’s only valid for God’s rescue mission and nothing else. The question is: Will you use it for the mission it was designed for?
