Embracing the Promise of Trouble
by Royce
While many of God’s promises take time—sometimes years or even decades—to be fulfilled, this one is fulfilled daily: “In this world, you will have trouble.” (John 16:33). It’s not the kind of promise we frame and hang on our walls, but it’s one we can be sure of, as it shows up in our lives every single day.
Trouble comes in many forms: loss, disappointments, sickness, and challenges. While we often wish for a life free from difficulty, Jesus doesn’t promise a life without pain. What He does promise is His peace and His overcoming power. When troubles arise, they aren’t meant to overwhelm us but to drive us closer to Christ.
The beauty of this promise is not found in the certainty of trouble, but in the assurance that Christ has already overcome the world. We don’t need to face difficulties alone or without hope. The troubles of this world are temporary, but the victory of Christ is eternal. When we focus on Him, we can endure anything, knowing He walks with us through it all.
It’s often our natural instinct to protect ourselves from harm that prevents us from experiencing the divine assurance that Christ has already overcome the world. When difficulties arise, we cling tightly to the illusion of control—planning, striving, and worrying—believing that by managing every detail, we can avoid pain and uncertainty. Yet, in the very act of holding on, we forfeit the peace that comes from surrendering to God.
Fear of surrender is rooted in the idea that if we let go, things will spiral out of control. We fear that God’s plans may not align with our desires or that His timing might not match our expectations. But Jesus didn’t just warn us about trouble—He also reminded us, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” The troubles we face are temporary, but His victory is eternal.
Surrendering can feel especially difficult when we’re in the midst of a storm. Yet, to surrender to God means letting Him take control of our lives, trusting Him with our pain, and seeking His peace rather than clinging to anxiety, fear, or anger. Here are some steps that can help guide you through the process of surrendering:
- Acknowledge Your Emotions Honestly
Start by identifying and acknowledging what you are feeling. It’s important not to suppress or ignore emotions. Whether it’s fear, sadness, frustration, or anger, being honest with yourself and with God is the first step in surrendering.Prayer Example:
“Lord, I’m feeling overwhelmed by fear and anxiety right now. It’s hard to find peace in this situation, and I’m struggling to hold it together.” - Bring Your Emotions to God in Prayer
Once you recognize what you’re feeling, bring those emotions before God. Share your heart openly with Him—He already knows, but He invites you to cast your burdens on Him (1 Peter 5:7). Prayer is a way to release those emotions into His hands.Prayer Example:
“God, I bring my anxiety and fear to You. I don’t want to carry these burdens on my own anymore. Please take them from me and replace them with Your peace.” - Release Control and Trust God’s Will
Surrender means letting go of the desire to control the outcome of a situation or how you feel. Trust that God can work in your heart even when things seem uncertain or painful. It requires faith to believe that He is working for your good, even when it’s hard to see.Prayer Example:
“Lord, I release my need to control this situation. I trust that You know what’s best for me. Help me to lean on You and not on my own understanding.” - Meditate on Scripture
God’s Word has the power to bring comfort and transform how we think and feel. Meditating on promises of peace, comfort, and God’s faithfulness can help shift your emotional state. Scriptures like Philippians 4:6-7, Psalm 34:17-18, or Matthew 11:28-30 remind us of God’s peace and presence.Example Meditation:
“God, Your Word says that when I am anxious, I should pray and Your peace will guard my heart. Help me to believe this promise and let it calm my fears.” - Let Go Repeatedly
Surrendering emotions is often not a one-time event. As feelings resurface, continue to bring them back to God. It’s a daily practice of releasing them to Him and receiving His peace.Prayer Example:
“Father, I’m still feeling unsettled about this. But once again, I give You my fears, my pain, and my frustration. I know You are with me.” - Seek Support from Others
Sometimes, sharing our emotional burdens with trusted friends or mentors can help in the process of surrender. God often works through community to provide comfort, guidance, and strength.
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I often try to control the outcome of situations instead of surrendering them to You. Help me to trust Your promises and to lean into Your peace even when I don’t understand the path ahead. Strengthen my faith, especially in times of trouble, and remind me that You have already overcome the world. Amen.
